The village square is an emblematic place of Basque culture. We meet there with family, friends, we meet people, we drink a coffee or a good draft, ... Many activities take place there such as mutxikoak (traditional Basque dances), Basque pelota games, shows, village festivals, ...
The center of Bidart, located just 900m from the OYAM Campsite, is no exception to the rule. Come and have a drink, or two, or more…, eat delicious meals while enjoying the day's entertainment. Don't forget the traditional market, every Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm. In summer you can also enjoy the night markets every Thursday from 6pm to 11pm.
Place Sauveur Atchoarena, where most of the entertainment takes place, has just been renovated! After 8 long months of work, it was finally inaugurated on June 1st. For the occasion, the Bidartars, residents of Bidart, were all invited to come and celebrate the event in costume. The theme of the evening was "1900s". On the program, official inauguration ceremony, flashmob open to all, mutxikoak, light show on the facades of the square and screening of a film on the construction site made by Toma Jablon.Click here if you want to see photos of the event)
Because yes, the renovation of the Atchoarena square was the subject of two films, directed by Toma Jablon. The first "Taupada", filmed before the construction site, has as its theme the unifying and social role of the Bidart square. Through photographs of the past, videos of the present and images of the future, the artist makes us understand the importance of the Atchoarena square in the communal life of Bidart.
In a second film called "Gizalana", screened during the opening night, we can follow the different actors who participated in the project and the transformations that the square has undergone.
