Everything you need to know about the Bayonne festivals

THE Bayonne festivals, a true must-see of Basque culture, begin this Wednesday. The opportunity for a little reminder of their history…

The first Bayonne festivities were officially declared open on Wednesday, July 13, 1932, inspired by the Pamplona festivities.

First dressed in blue and white, it was in 1996 that the festival adopted white and red in homage to the colours of Pamplona, its twin city since 1960.

Every year the Bayonne festivities open with the handing over of the keys to the city to the partygoers by King Leon. King of Bayonne, awakened every midday by the songs of the partygoers gathered under his balcony.

For 4 days, the city lives to the rhythm of the activities and entertainment offered at the festayres: Basque pelota, chili omelette competitions, cow races, Basque dances and concerts make the heart of the city beat. This year, the key handover ceremony and the children's day are making a comeback for the enjoyment of young and old.

To get to the parties, the OYAM Campsite offers you return bus tickets available at reception.
